resin surfaces

Moderate temperatures give contractors a practical window to complete resin-bound projects before summer demand increases. Understanding how these systems work helps contractors plan work more efficiently and deliver better performance overall.

What Makes Resin-Bound Surfaces Different

One of the most common misconceptions is the difference between resin-bonded and resin-bound surfaces. The distinction lies in how the stone meets the glue.

Resin-Bonded

Resin-bonded surfaces begin with resin being spread on the ground and then topped with stones. It’s non-porous, meaning water stays on top or runs off, leaving a rough, textured gravel. There’s often less durability with this method because stones can loosen over time.

Resin-Bound

Resin-bound surfaces begin with resin and stone being mixed together first, then smoothed down. It’s fully porous, meaning water drains through instantly. The surface is smooth, seamless and flat providing more durability.

Ace Resin

Ace Resin is particularly distinct because of its AceBound UVR technology – a high-performance, solvent free, CWA compliant resin binder suitable for vehicular and pedestrian use – and the ResiMesh system – a specially engineered fiberglass reinforced composite that serves multiple functions – , which specifically solves the biggest issue contractors and homeowners have – cracking and fading.

Ace Resin is the premium option for contractors because it removes the need to dig up the old driveway, allowing the project to move more quickly and leave less mess. Plus, Ace Resin’s system is engineered with flexural strength – meaning it can “flex” with the ground rather than cracking – which is nearly 40% stronger than standard concrete. And, Ace Resin uses a plant-based resin, with over 50% sustainable content making it the more sustainable choice for contractors.

Why Spring Is the Right Time for Resin Installations

Resin requires specific temperatures to cure properly. Winter is often too cold for the resin to set, and the high summer heat can make resin harden too quickly for installers to get a smooth finish. Spring provides the perfect climate for resin. Plus, with spring being notoriously wet, resin-bound surfaces are more permeable and prevent the surface from being too slippery. Installing in spring ensures the surface is fully cured before the heavier foot traffic of summer.

While overall, March and April are the best spring months for Ace Resin installations, the installation window depends entirely on local climate. Resin-bound systems require a dry sub-base and an ideal temperature that stays above 41° to ensure the bond sets correctly.

  • Coastal Regions – These areas often see milder temperatures earlier in the year, making early March viable.

  • Northern/High-Altitude Areas – These areas might want to wait until late April or early May. Late-season frosts can ruin the resin during the curing phase.

  • Southern/Inland Regions – These areas can typically start earlier than the others, as the ground temperature has usually stabilized by early March.

Key Benefits for Contractors

Resin-bound surfaces have much less maintenance compared to concrete or asphalt surfaces. The permeable design reduces the risk of surface water and helps meet many stormwater management requirements when paired with appropriate base construction. Plus, contractors and homeowners alike can expect faster installation turnaround for spring schedules.

Ace Resin at SiteOne

Ace Resin is available only at SiteOne. By partnering with Ace Resin, SiteOne has made resin-bound technology more easily accessible. And, you can find the entire Ace Resin ecosystem, not just the resin itself. Find everything from aggregates to hardscape tools to trims and more, all at SiteOne, your Hardscapes Headquarters.

Ace Resin also offers free contractor training. Once trained, contractors gain additional technical support and can become certified installers, allowing them to offer a 20-year warranty. To learn more about becoming a certified contractor, click here.

Resin-bound surfaces provide a durable, permeable and efficient option for spring hardscape projects. The material performs well in moderate temperatures and supports faster scheduling as the season ramps up. With Ace Resin available only at SiteOne, contractors have access to a reliable, well-supported system backed by professional training and resources.
