Their ability to nest in hard-to-reach areas and seasonal population spikes make them a serious pest control challenge. This article will teach you how to identify different types of stinging pest, inspect and provide treatment strategies for your clients.

Identify the Species

Understanding the differences between these stinging insects is essential for choosing the right treatment approach.

  • Wasps – Wasps have two sets of wings and six legs. They have antennae and hourglass waists. Their nests typically present as a gray, papery structure resembling a balloon shape or upside-down umbrella.

  • Hornets – Hornets are most often black and golden yellow and are typically bigger than wasps at around one and a half inches long. Their nests are typically much larger than wasp nests and are found in trees with a paper mâché appearance.

  • Yellow Jackets – Yellow Jackets are black with yellow markings and yellow legs. They build small, round and gray paper nests in trees or attached to structures, with up to 1000 workers in each. Yellow Jackets are often more aggressive than wasps or hornets.

Inspection and Risk Assessment

Early detection and thorough inspections reduce the risk of stings and property damage. Be on the lookout for nests and flight patterns. Stinging insects typically gravitate toward eaves, tree branches, attic spaces, shrubs and underground cavities. Insects returning to a central point often indicate the presence of a nearby nest. Client reports of stings or sightings should also trigger a detailed inspection.

Treatment Strategies for Professionals

When nests are discovered active, safety and precision are key. SiteOne recommends the following products to ensure eradication:

  •  Residual Insecticides
LESCO Aerosol Wasp and Hornet Plus sprays up to 20 feet away. It kills Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets on contact and, with residual action, also kills those returning to the nest later. Use indoors (attics and other places where nests are built) and outdoors on nests.

  • Traps
Rescue WHY Trap for wasps, hornets and yellowjackets designed to effectively capture and eliminate wasps, hornets and yellowjackets, this trap is a must-have for outdoor enthusiasts, gardeners and homeowners alike.

  • Aerosol Insecticides
PT Wasp Freeze II Wasp & Hornet Insecticide can travel 15 feet to provide applicator safety. The spray effectively kills wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, spiders and more.

Once a nest has been eliminated, remove it carefully while wearing proper PPE. Offer your clients recurring inspection services, especially in late spring and summer months when new colonies are typical. Ensure they are aware of where nests were found and treatment details.
