Whether you’re installing it for a residential lawn, pet area or high-traffic commercial space, using quality products is key to achieving long-lasting results.

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials

Before getting started, make sure you have everything on hand to complete the job efficiently. Here’s what you’ll need:

Other helpful tools include:

Step 2: Prepare the Site

Start by clearing the area where the synthetic turf will be installed. Remove existing grass, weeds and debris. Then, excavate to a depth of approximately 4” to make room for the base.

TIP: Geotextile fabrics, rodent barriers and landscape fabrics are all options that help ensure project longevity.

Ensure the area is level and properly graded for a smooth, stable foundation that supports drainage and long-term performance.

Step 3: Install the Base Material

A solid base layer of crushed rock or class 2 road base approximately 3” thick is critical to prevent shifting, promote drainage and maintain a level surface.

  • Fill the excavated area with approximately 3” of base material.
  • Spread it evenly across the surface using a rake until it is level and firm and compact with a plate tamper.

Step 4: Roll Out the Turf

Once your base is compacted and level, it’s time to unroll the turf.

  • Lay out the Pro-Trade synthetic turf, starting at one edge of the area and working across.
  • Allow the turf to sit in the sun for 30-60 minutes to ease installation and reduce wrinkles.
  • Ensure all rolls are aligned with the blades facing the same direction.

Tip: Use a utility knife to trim any excess around edges, landscaping features or walkways.

Step 5: Cut and Fit the Turf

If your project requires multiple rolls of turf:

  • Trim the edges of the turf in a serpentine pattern with the Pro-Cutta tool to better hide seams.
  • Place Pro-Trade seam tape underneath the joint with adhesive applied.
  • Press turf edges down firmly to create a seamless, natural-looking connection.

Step 6: Secure the Turf

With your turf in position, it’s time to secure it.

  • Use Pro-Trade turf nails or landscape staples spaced every 6 inches along the perimeter and every 2 feet throughout the interior.
  • Hammer nails in just below the surface of the turf to avoid visible heads.

Tip: Ensure seams are securely fastened with additional staples or nails as needed.

Step 7: Apply the Infill and Inspect

Infill adds weight, protects the turf fibers and helps mimic the feel of real grass.

  • Spread infill material, such as silica, evenly across the turf.
  • Use a drop spreader or a power broom to work the infill into the turf fibers.
  • Brush to help lift the blades and improve the final appearance.

Once complete, walk through the area to inspect and ensure there are no needed adjustments.
