Plenty of commercial properties are still lit by systems that went in years ago. The fixtures keep coming on at night, so there's never an obvious reason to replace them. But older lighting costs more to run the longer it stays in service. Energy use climbs every year, and the output grows uneven as individual fixtures fade at different rates.

Maintenance turns into a regular expense as parts wear out. Retrofitting to LED brings those costs back down. In Canada, though, the upgrade only pays off when you plan around cold and snow from the start, since a job done without that in mind can create as many problems as it solves.


Where Legacy Lighting Systems Fall Short

Older systems use a lot of power. Metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures draw heavily, and on a property where the lights run from mid-afternoon until the next morning all winter, that adds up to a serious utility bill. Brightness and colour drift as the lamps age, so some fixtures stay bright while others dim, leaving patchy coverage across the lot and making the property look and feel less safe after dark. 

Lamps also burn out and need replacing more often as the system gets older, while ballasts and other components fail in wet or freezing weather, putting crews back on site for repairs that should not be routine. On top of that, older systems give you almost no control. Most run on a basic timer or photocell, so the lights stay at full output from dusk to dawn whether anyone's there or not.


What Changes with LED Retrofits

LED fixtures use about half the power of the systems they replace while putting out the same light or better, and over a long Canadian winter that cuts the energy bill noticeably. The output stays consistent too, holding its brightness and colour for the life of the fixture, so the property looks the same in February as it did the day the system went in. 

Because LEDs last far longer than older lamps, maintenance tends to drop off sharply, with service calls measured in years instead of months. LEDs also give you real control over how the lights run. With timers and dimming built in, or a full smart-control system, you can match output to how the property gets used, so a walkway runs bright at dusk and eases down after midnight while a parking lot adjusts for an event without anyone touching the panel.


Cold Weather Performance Considerations

Cold is where LEDs earn their keep. They come on at full brightness the moment you switch them on, even well below freezing, with none of the warm-up delay older lamps need in winter. 

Snow changes the picture, though. Fresh snow reflects a lot of light, so a setting that looks right in October can throw harsh glare by January once everything's white. And because LEDs run cool instead of hot, they don't melt the snow that piles up on them the way the old fixtures did. A low or in-ground fixture can disappear under one snowfall and stop doing its job entirely, so raising the fixtures or going pole-mounted often makes more sense up here. 

Not every LED is built for a Canadian winter, either. A driver rated only to -20°C will quit when the temperature drops past it, so confirm the cold-weather rating before you buy.


Retrofit vs Full Replacement: What to Evaluate

A retrofit keeps your existing housings and mounting and just swaps in new lamps and internal parts, which makes it the faster and more cost-effective option when the rest of the system is in good condition. 

Full replacement usually makes more sense when the infrastructure has worn out, since corroded housings or old wiring won't support new LED components for long. Properties with very old systems often come out ahead replacing everything, especially when the original fixture layout no longer fits how the site gets used.

A few things to look at before you decide:

  • The condition of the existing housings, wiring, and mounting
  • Whether retrofit kits are available for the fixtures you already have
  • Whether the old wiring can handle the load an LED system places on it
  • Whether the current layout still fits how the property gets used
  • The cost of fixing up old infrastructure against starting fresh


Installation Realities in Canadian Conditions

Timing counts as much as the products you pick. You’ll want to get the work done before the ground freezes so you have room to adjust if something comes up, because frozen soil makes digging out wiring or moving a fixture a lot harder than it would be in milder weather. 

Late summer and early fall give you the most room to work. On an active property, you'll usually want to retrofit overnight or during slow hours, working in phases so part of the site stays lit while the rest gets done. Seal everything well against the freeze-thaw cycle, too, since water that gets into a fixture or junction box will show up as a failure months later. Weatherproof connectors and a careful check of every seal during the install can help avoid a callback.


Managing Output and Avoiding Overlighting

LEDs put out more usable light per watt than the old fixtures, so swapping them in at the same wattage usually lights the space far brighter than you need. Set the output to what the site needs instead of matching the old numbers, and you'll cut glare and save even more energy. Dimming and controls help you hold that balance through the night, keeping a walkway bright while people are moving through and easing it back once the traffic dies down. Overlighting just wastes power and bothers the people using the space, so confirming the right levels at install is what gets you the full benefit of the upgrade.


Operational and Cost Benefits Over Time

The savings stack up over a full season. Energy is the big one, since a property running its lights 14 to 16 hours a day through a Canadian winter sees a real return from cutting that draw by half or more. Maintenance costs drop right alongside, because longer-lasting fixtures mean fewer service calls and less labour spent swapping lamps, and the savings are biggest on fixtures that are a pain to reach. 

The steady output is the last piece. LEDs that hold their brightness keep the property looking sharp year-round, which counts for a lot anywhere lighting affects how safe and put-together a place feels.
